Die 40. Cape Town Cycle Tour (auch bekannt als Cape Argus) wird abgeblasen
Die Wetterwarnung vom Rennveranstalter am Vorabend hätte uns vielleicht schon stutzig machen sollen: Jeder, der sich nicht wohl fühle, bei starkem Wind Rad zu fahren, solle überlegen, zu Hause zu bleiben und nicht zu starten. Jedoch hieß es auch, dass man nicht so extreme Bedingungen wie 2009 erwartete, wo beim Start die Dixie-Klos durch die Luft geflogen sind und nur die Hälfte der Radfahrer wirklich gestartet ist. Und die Zeit sollte für uns sprechen, denn der Wind sollte erst ab mittags zunehmen. Mit 07:20 hatte ich eine recht frühe Startzeit. Ich hatte hervorragend geschlafen, fühlte mich fit und radelte um 06:20 vom Hotel los. Es war schön draußen und es schien nur eine leichte Brise zu wehen. Aus allem Ecken krochen weitere Radfahrer. Was für eine schöne Atmosphäre, noch vor dem Sonnenaufgang, milde Temperaturen, ein bisschen kühl vielleicht und die freudige Anspannung vor dem Rennen lag in der Luft. Das war mein Tag! Als wir jedoch kurz vor der Startlinie links abbogen, wurden wir von solchen Windböen erfasst, dass die ersten schon vom Rad flogen oder vorsichtshalber anhielten und ausklickten. Ich war zuerst noch ganz entschlossen, mit Druck auf dem Pedal dem Wind zu trotzen, jedoch musste ich auch stoppen, da vor mir alles stoppte. Kaum den Fuß auf der Erde wehte mein Rad schon zur Seite. Also schoben die meisten das Rad weiter, ich auch. Und so langsam bekam ich ein ganz ungutes Gefühl, ob es wirklich sinnvoll sei, bei diesen Bedingungen zu starten. Dann hörte ich eine Passantin sagen: “The race is cancelled.” Zuerst dachte ich, das sei ein Scherz, denn es war niemand vom Veranstalter. Aber dann haben wir die Veranstalter-Crew gefragt, die an der Absperrung zu den Startblöcken standen und sie haben es bestätigt. Hinterm Zaun im Startblock waren noch ganz viele Radfahrer, nach und nach wurden sie durch die Zäune herausgelassen – wie eine Horde Rennpferde, die enttäuscht ist, unverrichteter Dinge aus der Startbox entlassen zu werden. Es herrschte ein großes Chaos, das sich langsam auflöste, indem sich die Radfahrer in alle Himmelsrichtungen verstreuten, entweder zurück zum Hotel oder dem Wind trotzend auf eine “jetzt erst recht”-Trainingsrunde. (So mancher wurde aber schnell wieder zum Umkehren bewegt.) Ich habe drei andere aus unserer Truppe getroffen und wir sind zurück zum Hotel geradelt – zum zweiten Frühstück. Andere der Gruppe, die erst später hätten starten sollen, sind zu einer Trainingsrunde aufgebrochen, viele kamen aber früher zurück – aufgrund des extremen Windes.
Später machten viele Videos die Runde – von Radfahrern, die vom Rad geweht wurden, kaum laufen konnten, oder ihre horizontal wehenden Räder festzuhalten versuchten. Offenbar hatte es kurz nach dem Start der Profis schon schwere Stürze und Verletzte gegeben. Wenn die Profis da nicht fahren konnten, hätten wir Amateure vermutlich richtig alt ausgesehen.
Zusätzlich hatte es wohl Proteste an der Strecke gegeben, eine Straße war zerstört, so dass das Rennen ohnehin schon 30km gekürzt worden war. Und ein Buschfeuer war auch noch in der Nähe der Strecke, weshalb sie wohl die Straßen frei halten wollten, um es bekämpfen zu können.
Der Veranstalter hat definitiv die richtige Entscheidung getroffen, das Rennen abzusagen – auch wenn es in der 40-jährigen Geschichte des Cape Argus das erste Mal war. Und das auch noch beim 40-jährigen Jubiläum.
Ich bin an dem Tag nicht mehr gefahren. Abends haben wir aber trotzdem die “After Race” zur “No Race Party” erklärt und gefeiert. Am Montag haben wir dann als Entschädigung eine lange Trainingstour an die Westküste gemacht. Und Dienstag sind wir zu dritt noch mal zum Chapmans Peak gefahren – Abschied nehmen von Südafrika mit einer atemberaubenden Aussicht. Der Chapmans Peak Drive gehört bestimmt zu den schönsten Straßen der Welt, die man mit dem Rennrad fahren kann. 🚴🏻♀️☀️
